The earliest recorded Ohio immigrant from Ukraine was at the end of the 19th century and in Cleveland that settlement was in the Tremont area. Over the following years as arrivals continued a need became apparent for assisting newcomers with employment options, educational resources and spiritual life. A number of entities were established to fill those needs, however, with varying, Ukrainian regional backgrounds and perspectives, it became apparent that a cohesive entity was needed to coordinate activities and represent the Ukrainian community to the broader public. That lead to the creation of the United Ukrainian Organization in 1928.
